Recipe for Greek Souvlaki

Cuisine ,
Ingredients
  • .5 pounds , skinless chicken breasts (or lamb/beef if preferred)
  • .25 cup olive oil
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Wooden skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes
    Tzatziki sauce (optional, for serving)
Pita bread or rice (for serving)
Instructions
  1. Prepare Marinade:

In a bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine

  2. Prepare Chicken:

Cut the chicken breasts into 1-inch cubes and place them in a large resealable plastic bag or shallow dish.

Pour the marinade over the chicken, making sure it's evenly coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for the best flavor.

  3. Skewer the Chicken:Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Thread the marinated chicken pieces onto the soaked wooden skewers, leaving a little space between each piece. Discard any excess marinade
  4. Grill the Souvlaki:

Grease the grill grates lightly with oil to prevent sticking.

Place the skewers on the grill and cook for about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and has nice grill marks. Cooking time may vary based on the thickness of the chicken pieces.

  5. Serve:

Remove the skewers from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes.

Serve the Greek Souvlaki hot, either by sliding the chicken off the skewers onto a plate or serving them directly on the skewers.

Optionally, serve with tzatziki sauce on the side for dipping and with pita bread or rice to complete the meal.

Yield: This recipe makes approximately 4 servings, depending on appetites and accompanying side dishes.

  6. Time:

Preparation time: 15 minutes + marinating time

    Cooking time: 10-12 minutes

Total time: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes (including marinating time)

    Enjoy your homemade Greek Souvlaki!
